I didn’t want to shell out $100 to buy a “special” longbike rack and figured I could hack the existing Yakima racks I already had.
Parts needed:
1) A used Yakima bike tray from phat friend who doesn’t bike anymore (free) or from Craigslist or eBay
2) Set of four mounting bolts and set of four hex keys for $11 total (deals at RackOutfitters.com). I also bought an extra Rattler wheel strap for $15. That way I didn’t have to disconnect everything to move the strap when changing from short to long bike and back but this is extra.
3) Black heavy duty 25mm wide shelving bracket (mine is made by Rubbermaide) $7
Measure, cut, and drill:
*Measure amount of extra tray needed to extend total tray length the length of the long bike and cut to length
*Hold cut tray piece to end of uncut tray and measure aft of rear crossbar to end of cut tray minus two inches for end cap. (BTW I use Yakima Steelhead trays) and cut to length.
*Drill holes into cut shelf bracket piece to accept the four mounting bolts (spread these out to distribute the stress of load)
At this point it’s easy to see how everything assembles
Insert bolts through the drilled holes
Slide bolt heads into bolt channel in bottom of the uncut and cut trays
Tighten bolts until trays slide perfectly into shelf bracket and snug down
Slide Rattler wheel strap on end of lengthened tray and then fit end cap (from uncut tray) onto end
So I picked up a 1982 Trek 730 road bike last week on V-Day among other indiscretions. Anyhow it’s a beautiful frameset which came with a Campagnolo Super Record headset. Paint isn’t terrible bad though I may send it to be restored but the stickers are a bit tired. I’ve ordered Reynolds 531 stickers but can’t find yet a remake of the seat tube TREK sticker. Asked Yellow Jersey who doesn’t have any or know of anyone who does, and I’ve asked Cycle Art who hasn’t responded yet.
Other issues include that the dumbbell who owned it before the last guy filed off the down tube shifter bosses, so I’ve ordered a set from Nova Cycles Supply to be brazed on as soon as I can shake Paul from his lair. The stupidest thing that was done was that the steerer tube was cut in half and then re-brazed using a sleeve inside for reinforcement. This makes it almost impossible to get the right sized stem in so I’ve also ordered from Nova, a steerer tube as well and will braze that together with the original fork.
The bike was originally sold by Trek just as a frameset and never a complete bike but the 736, it’s sister bike, was. Some of the components were Campagnolo so I’ve decided to outfit it with all Campy components.
So far from my stock:
• Frame Saver treatment
• Nitto 26.0 moustache bars
• Shimano bar-end shifters (just for show)
• Tektro brake levers (just for show)
• Campagnolo Centaur cantilevers
• Campagnolo Super Record headset
• Campagnolo Veloce 10 speed 170mm triple 52/42/30 crankset
• Campagnolo dropout screws
• SKS fenders
• White carbon threadless stem w/quill stem adaptor (just for show)
• Zoom seatpost (just for show)
• Shimano XT front hub on Alex Adventurer rim (just for show)
The brake levers will be replaced soon with Campy Record aero levers as well as the bar end shifter for Campy 10 speed TT bar ends. I will also have soon Campy 10 speed rear and front derailleurs, and Nitto Deluxe 90mm stem.
