Good point, however, I've seen many great old bikes that could have been restored hacked (literally) to convert to a fixie and original paint painted over to a lime green or a hot pink to make it look "hipster." A classic Trek 730 that I got off of Craigslist had its downtube braze-ons cut off for fixie conversion and I later discovered that the previous owner also had cut it's steer tube short and then rebrazed it back on.. what a waste!

It's like discovering an old Van Gogh in the closet and painting over it, there could have been someone somewhere who would have appreciated such a great piece of work and done it justice rather than ruining it. That said, I have also seen some classics get restored sans dérailleurs.

Except that those ridiculous fixie hipsters are a) riding bikes everywhere, and b) using several generations of nice bicycles whose original owners have given up on them.

I'd rather they get road miles than garage time.

Nice journal, your photography and video are great, as always. I especially like the riding video. Makes me want to head out there and ride (when the weather is cooler).

Hope the weather cools down for you,

Comment on 58 cm Surly Long Haul Trucker F-R-A-M-E-S-E-T for sale $375 by twodeadpoets

Thanks Will for the comments and compliments!
Plan B is most definitly the less expensive way and highly recommended if you're just getting into bike touring or if you are upgrading your current tourer. One of the reasons LHTs are a great deal is because they come with pretty decent components. However, plan B though most expensive, obviously allows you complete control over what components you go on the bike. For example; some people want a great drivetrain but don't care as much about the brakes, or they want a great wheelset and bombproof tires, they might want all top end Campagnolo or downtube shifters versus the barend shifters or even STIs (brake/shifter combo). I originally went with a plan C; I started with the complete bike then replaced the frameset because it was too big for the next size down, then decided that I wanted particular components such as a Books saddle and handlebar tape on randonneur bars, stem and seatpost, wood fenders, dynamo hub, smaller inside chainring, etc. The only parts that are original are the brake levers, drivetrain, rear wheelset, and then of course all the other touring accessories.
If you have some time and want a bike specific for you you might get the frameset and then slowly build up the components over time (when you can afford the next piece) that said most people who own a stock LHT whom I've talked to LOVE them as is (with an exception of the crappy saddle).

The picture is of my original (albeit too big) utility blue LHT and then I used the water colour filter in Photoshop. This site is named after my blue bike and thought I'd keep the name as a tribute.

I hoped all this rambling helped.
Cheers!

I was also googling aroung for the LHT and came upon your excellent page. I'd like ask you about (plan A) purchasing the frame/fork and then adding parts or (plan B) buying the whole bike. Will the price increase significantly with option A? I'm looking for a 58 or 60cm frame in any color, in case you have one lying around. Thanks
