Amen!
Except that those ridiculous fixie hipsters are a) riding bikes everywhere, and b) using several generations of nice bicycles whose original owners have given up on them.
I’d rather they get road miles than garage time.
Good point, however, I’ve seen many great old bikes that could have been restored hacked (literally) to convert to a fixie and original paint painted over to a lime green or a hot pink to make it look “hipster.” A classic Trek 730 that I got off of Craigslist had its downtube braze-ons cut off for fixie conversion and I later discovered that the previous owner also had cut it’s steer tube short and then rebrazed it back on.. what a waste!
It’s like discovering an old Van Gogh in the closet and painting over it, there could have been someone somewhere who would have appreciated such a great piece of work and done it justice rather than ruining it. That said, I have also seen some classics get restored sans dérailleurs.
